A Guide to Finding a Fitness Club

You would like to join a fitness club but there are so many choices! And then you will just end up having a headache! Fitness clubs are effective motivators. They should motivate us and not frustrate us. Before you choose on a fitness club, make sure that it suits your needs and goals. And before you do that, you should first learn and decide on what is your priority. By then, you will know what you really need in a fitness club. Here are some guidelines you can consider in choosing a fitness club that is best for you:

1. Where is it located?

The location is the first thing that you should consider when finding a fitness club. If the club is far from your home, you will just another excuse not to work out. It is best to find a facility that is near your home.

2. Are the employees friendly and nice? Will they be able to help you reach your goals?

Make sure that the instructor has the necessary experience to work with you. The instructor should be a certified professional that can work with you safely and effectively. Your instructor should also know if you have physical limitations or you may find an instructor that is well trained to work with you. You can also check the age of the instructor especially if it is one factor for your motivation and learning. The staff should also be helpful, friendly and professional. You can also ask the services they offer and find what is important for you. Some facilities have their own dietician and physical therapists that can offer services for you.

3. What kind of programs does it offer?

Find time to see what programs are there for you and check if they suit your interests. Do they offer group classes? Choose the facility that offers the classes you really like. You can do a trial class to check it out if you want.

4. Are the facilities and equipments good and will they be available anytime that is most convenient for you?

Check if the equipments are enough for all members. Otherwise, you will waste your time falling in line and waiting for your turn. Also make sure that the facility is open during the time you are most likely to do work outs and exercises.

5. Is the entire facility well maintained, clean and safe for you?

Machines and other training facilities should be in clean and in good order. If you see a lot of “out of order” signs, it could be something to think about. Modern equipments are safer and more comfortable to use, so you may also want to consider that. Are the floors cleaned regularly to avoid accidents? Is there enough room for everyone? Also check if the facility is located in a place away from danger, consider also if the location is well lit.

6. Are the members of the club friendly and can they be your friends?

The fitness club is also a venue for social interaction. Take time to drop by and meet the members of the club before you enroll. Other members can be your buddies in the near future and should be considered.

7. What is the schedule of classes and will they be convenient for you?

Find out what classes are offered at a specific time and consider if you will be available at the schedules given.

8. How much would it cost you?

It is important to know the monthly membership fee and what it covers. Some fitness clubs have hidden charges and you should be keen in checking that. Check if they have promotions or discounts and do they offer services at an extra fee. It is also important to know how long the club has been and how often they increase rates.

9. How is it different from other fitness clubs?

Don’t just stick into one fitness club. Try to visit as many facilities as you can and make a comparison. Then you can just narrow down your choices to the facilities that met your needs and priorities.

10. What do people say about it? Take your time to gather feedback from other members. Ask them what they can say about the club and let them tell you about the experiences with the facility.

Choosing a fitness club is just like shopping on the best shirt for you. Do not be pressured and do not try to contact them right away. You can take your time to review and gather enough information if you are still not sure which one to choose. Once you have made your choice, enjoy and make the most out of it.

Joe Nathan Foundation Makes $half Million Donation to Joe’s Alma Mater, Stony Brook University

The All-Star closer for the Minnesota Twins and Stony Brook graduate (BS ‘97) has made a $500,000 lead gift to the University’s Department of Athletics. In recognition of the sizeable gift, the State University of New York has announced that the new field will be named “Joe Nathan Field.”

“My experiences as a part of the Stony Brook athletics family helped get me to where I am today,” remarked Nathan. “I feel extremely fortunate to be playing baseball as a professional athlete and feel strongly about supporting the growth of the Stony Brook baseball program. Coach (Matt) Senk has built an extremely successful program; one with which I’m very proud to be affiliated. I look forward to following and supporting our baseball program to even greater success in the years to come,” he added.

While playing with the Stony Brook University Seawolves, Nathan was a two-time Academic All-American and was also inducted into the Stony Brook Athletics Hall of Fame in December 2006, when he also became the first former Stony Brook student-athlete to have his jersey number retired.

“Joe Nathan’s generosity and leadership in making this wonderful gift underscores the importance of the spirit of philanthropy that is growing among our alumni,” said Fiore. “As much as Joe was a talented collegiate athlete and a high achiever as a student; more importantly he is a remarkable human being. We are very proud of Joe and are thrilled to name our baseball field in his honor. It will serve as a lasting tribute to his continued love for his experience as a Stony Brook student-athlete,” he added.

Nathan’s former coach, Matt Senk, added “Joe’s support of our baseball program is greatly appreciated. He embodies all the core values we try to instill in our student-athletes; commitment, passion, pride, respect and swagger. Current and future Stony Brook baseball student-athletes will benefit from playing in a facility which Joe’s gift will help build. Future Stony Brook recruits will be able to look forward to playing in one of the finest facilities in the northeast.”

The donation is the first major endowment provided by the Joe Nathan Foundation, commonly referred to as Save-It. Last year, the foundation launched a Joe Nathan web site (www.JoeNathan.com). The site features a Joe Nathan blog. An RSS feed of the American League All-Star closer’s season and the latest photos of Joe and his teammates.

This month, the foundation will be offering merchandise for sale on the site. All proceeds from the sale of the autographed pictures, jerseys, shirts and caps will go directly to the “Save-It” foundation.

“Finding success as a major ball player has been terrific,” said Joe. “I have met so many wonderful fans during my college years on Long Island, minor league days down south, my time in San Francisco and of course, in Minnesota. The foundation gives my fans a chance to share in my success and for all of us to give back to our communities,” he said

“Congratulations to Joe Nathan on his great successes while at Stony Brook as a student-athlete and as an all-star pitcher for the Minnesota Twins,” said Richard Nasti, Chair of the Stony Brook Council. “His decision to share those successes with his alma mater, and for the University to name the field in his honor, is a cherished opportunity. I congratulate President Shirley StrumKenny, Director of Athletics Jim Fiore and Head Coach Matt Senk for sharing in this vision with Joe and helping to create a great opportunity for current and future baseball student-athletes at Stony Brook.”

Whitewater Rafting in Colorado, Setting Up for an Exciting 2007 Vacation Season

The snow is melting. The rivers are swollen with the fresh spring run-off. The current is swift. The waves have grown in size and frequency. This marks the beginning of the 2007 whitewater rafting season on the Arkansas River in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains.

The Upper Arkansas River basin received abundant snowfall this winter offering whitewater enthusiasts’ ample water for the upcoming whitewater season. 2007 promises to be one of the best rafting seasons in years as the Rocky Mountain west recovers from drought conditions. Colorado’s rivers primarily depend on the snow pack for their water supply. Peak native run-off usually occurs sometime in late May and June providing the most exciting whitewater opportunities. The Arkansas River is unique among Colorado’s Rivers in that its’ water resources are managed by the “Voluntary Flow Program”. Water is stored in three different reservoirs at the headwaters near Leadville. The entities that own and manage the waters that feed the Arkansas River have coordinated with Colorado State Parks and the Arkansas River’s outfitters to supplement the native flow when the snowmelt subsides. This provides the Arkansas River with enough water late in the season to allow whitewater operations well into September.

The Arkansas River in southern Colorado saw 282,381 commercial rafting visitors in 2006 up 3.97% from 2005. The numbers continue to grow as more and more travelers are realizing this is a sport that anyone can participate in under the direction of a qualified guide and licensed outfitter. The Arkansas River in southern Colorado is one of the most user-friendly rivers anywhere in the world. It offers whitewater rafting trips suitable for everyone. Whitewater adventure trips are a great family or group activity and also appeal to the avid outdoors adventure enthusiasts. Visitors can choose from half-day excursions to multi-day overnight river adventures. The Arkansas provides over 110 miles of whitewater with varying levels of difficulty. Trips range from class II scenic floats to class V extreme trips through the world-renowned Royal Gorge. Many class III trips are suitable for children as young as 6 years old or at least 50 lbs. Size requirements must be met in order to provide them with proper fitting safety gear. The ability to swim well is not required for easier runs. However, it is mandatory for all class IV and above rapids.

Rafting trips are very affordable with prices ranging from $30 to $599 per person depending on trip options and duration. The outfitter provides all river gear and some trips include riverside lunches, or multiple meals if you’re on an overnight trip. It is important to have properly fitted PFD’s (personal flotation device), and helmets. During the peak run-off wetsuits are mandatory as the water temperatures can be as low as 40°. Splash Jackets, heavy-duty windbreakers are also provided to help eliminate the wind chill. During the warmer summer month’s swimsuits are the attire of choice. Sport sandals, water socks, or an old pair of tennis shoes are the suggested footwear. Contact lenses are not recommended. If you choose to wear eyeglasses or sunglasses bring retaining cords such as chums or croakies to prevent loosing them to the river. Plan on bringing waterproof sunscreen as Colorado’s high altitude lends itself to the potential for sunburn. With all of the appropriate equipment and skilled guides, whitewater rafting is one of the most fun and exciting means of getting into Colorado’s scenic backcountry.

Commercial river guides operating in Colorado are required to meet minimum state standards. Certain sections of river have more stringent requirements that guides must meet before navigating commercial passenger rafts. All guides are required to hold current CPR/First Aid certifications, and many exceed these requirements with Wilderness First Responder certifications. River guides in Colorado undergo extensive training in river safety techniques and river rescue scenarios enabling them to provide their guests with a safe and exciting trip. River guides are some of the most entertaining and colorful folks you’ll ever meet. They guide as a result of their passion for the sport, and the thrill of passing this passion on to their guests. Most guides are not only expert boatmen, they also boast a working knowledge of the areas history and ecology. A guide’s salary is modest at best for the amount of responsibility bestowed upon them. Twelve to fourteen hour days are common during the peak season. Gratuities are graciously accepted as a show of appreciation for their hard work in providing their guests with an exciting and memorable experience.

Panama Real Estate Flight From Hell

“You’ve got a good head on your shoulders” Moose told me. It was the second time I had heard that saying in about a week and I was pressed into envisioning just what exactly someone would look like who did not have a good head on their shoulders. A bobble-head doll was as far as I got when Carl interrupted again:

“Excuse me but can you move out of my way? If you don’t I’m gonna pee in my pants.”

I had bought my plane ticket on extremely short notice and consequently been penalized with perhaps the worst seat in the entire aircraft. 18B. After arriving and seating myself next to a little boy in the window seat, I thought that would be the extent of my punishment—an annoying child. “Hi” he said with this loud shriek before I even had a chance to take my seat, “I’m Carl.” Carl was small, about the size of a young bobcat, and had this piercingly annoying personality which I’m sure his mother and teachers labeled as inquisitive.

I sat there getting situated as Carl yapped my ear off about a number of things; from the new sneakers he had scored for his birthday, to his wobbly front tooth which, in my opinion, was destined to come out during our time together. Carl was in the middle of demonstrating its imminence when the reality of the next few hours set in. A large walrus-of-a-man appeared at our row, the shadow of his frame darkening about half the cabin. The man looked at his seat, then looked at Carl and me as if we were somehow part of the problem. “Why are you so fat?” Carl blurted out.

Children have my utmost respect when it comes to being blunt and Carl, with that one question, had impressed me. “Well” the fat man said, “I guess I eat a lot.” You can say that again, I thought to myself.

“Jeez, I could fit four of me in your tummy!” Carl was really talking from his heart and I couldn’t help but smirk with approval. The man sat down and wedged himself between the armrests, becoming lodged like an overstuffed sausage. In an effort to make him more comfortable, I scooted a little bit closer to Carl giving Moose (as we would come to find out) some extra space.

Moose was a Florida native, heading to Panama for what he termed “a real estate venture”. He wore one of those futuristic earpieces connected to his cell phone which allowed him to use his hands to do other things, like eat. On his feet were some of the biggest therapeutic shoes I’ve ever seen, close to the size of footballs. When he asked why I was going to Panama, I told him I was a professional shark breeder, and being that Moose (like most people) had never met a professional shark breeder before, I was able to explain to him just what it was I did. Carl took real interest in my profession, asking typical-industry questions like, “do sharks fart?” and “do sharks poop?”

Moose was fifty nine. He and his 77 million co-baby boomers are the group that is targeted for Panama’s current real estate thrust. He is part of a psychographic that simply is ready to retire, move somewhere new, and start again. Alongside the baby boomers too, is the late-twenties to early forties demographic: Panama must groom itself for the eventual Generation Xers—a generation characterized by big challenges, international flings, and anything but the typical corporate ladder. People like Moose are tired and frustrated of the chronic workaholism and ready for something new. When I heard him use phrases like “start living again” and “take a risk for once”, I knew good things would be waiting for him in Panama.

“I don’t have a whole lot (of money)” Moose said, “but I’m really excited to see where what I do have will take me. What’s life without a little risk?”

The flight to Panama City was characterized by deafening chatter and zero breathing room. But in Moose, a symbolic viewpoint was established and for that I felt lucky. Not everyone can just up and leave for a tropical paradise, but for some, it’s not as far off as they think. When the plane eventually landed and everyone turned on their cell phones, there was a chorus of chiming and dingles. One woman, upon hearing the messages delivered to her phone mid-flight, burst out screaming which eventually melted into tears.

“What’s wrong?” Carl asked her. “An alligator ate my dog!” she howled. “An alligator ate Teapot!” Everyone on the plane gasped and it was true: sometime during our flight, a ravenous alligator had climbed out of a lake near to her home and eaten her beloved nine year-old llhasa apso. The tragedy happened completely out of the blue.

I pictured Teapot planning what she was going to do that evening or maybe thinking about what she’d eat for an afternoon snack. What Teapot didn’t know was that life, more specifically a 5-foot alligator, had other plans for her. I pictured Teapot and the fear that must’ve run through her eyes just before the final kill, wishing maybe that she had eaten that extra biscuit that morning or smelled that extra behind at the park. Because after all, what’s life, if you haven’t lived a little.
