A New Shark In The Market – The Samsung S5550 Shark 2
The leading Korean mobile phone maker Samsung recently announced an entry level series of handsets it brands the Shark. The first mobile phones in the range, the candy bar Shark (S5350) and slider phones Shark 2 (S5550) and Shark 3 (S3550), were launched last month and if the press release were to be believed they should be out at this time.
Taking a closer look at the Samsung S5550 Shark2 reveals that it is oddly the top-of-line of all three, even if the numbering system puts it in the middle. This is a welcome throwback to the traditional slim non-touchscreen slider styling that has made Samsung phones popular.
Its positioning as a budget featured phone explains the traditional form factor which has become quite common to many of Samsung’s handsets. This time, it gets an updated cutting-edge set of features blended with the usual feature pack we’ve met before in its class.
Upscale Features at a Glance
The handset measures a slim 102 x 49 x 15mm and weighs a pocket-friendly 99g slider body that houses the quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE radio on 2G and dual band UMTS on 3G with HSDDAP at 3.6 Mbps.
Its slider construction is an intelligent crafting of Kevlar and metallic surfaces that create an appealing look and unique feel. At first glance, the Shark 2 or any of its brothers is a modest handset that won’t be standing out to give you any bragging rights with your friends’ more hip touchscreen or full QWERTY smartphones.
This is a down-to-earth handset for the practical consumer who looks at a mobile phone as a primary communications tool on the road, not a GPS, not a portable movie player or a camera. But for an entry level handset, it has a 5-megapxel autofocus with LED flash, image stabilization and face and smile detection features found only in handsets costing more. It also has QVGA video recording at a cinema grade 30fps.
Don’t expect 3-inch displays. This one only has the smallish 2.2” screen with QVGA resolution and 256k color support. But it uses the more cutting-edge AMOLED display technology which has found made its way in other budget phones in the Samsung stable.
Image quality is excellent indoors but useless under bright sunlight. Its advantage lies in faster response times and lower power consumption. The latter is quite useful in slim handsets with relatively weaker batteries for longer talk times.
Standard Feature Set
Other than these, the Samsung S5550 Shark 2 is true to form as a budget handset that offers value where it matters the most. And for the youthful crowd it’s targeting, the Shark 2 is also a mobile social networking handset that allows instant one-click access to your Facebook, MySpace, Bebo and other social sites right from the homescreen.
It communities software allows the sharing and updating of media files to global SNS and photo and video sharing sites like Flickr, YouTube, Picas and Photobucket. Despite having no GPS, you get Google Maps bundled with it.
There’s no WiFi but you get the usual Bluetooth and microUSB support for local data synching. Internal memory comes at a modest 110 MB but you get the usual microSD support for up to 8GB according to its specs. But it’s not uncommon for larger 16GB cards to be useful as well. Music and video players support the usual media codecs together with stereo FM with broadcast recording. Its 960 mAh lithium ion battery delivers up to 11 hours of talk time and 26 hours in standby when fully charged.
