There are definitely bigger issues to ponder these days, but with spring training only a few months away, it’s time to take another look at the process by which baseball allows some teams to use the system to get more powerful, while other teams without the TV contracts and big market positions struggle.

I know the argument that these teams earned their positions and need to funnel the money that they make back into the team and into a superior product for their fans who expect playoffs if not championship every year.

These teams that inflate salaries by signing players to these contracts do pay a penalty in the form of the luxury tax, but for them it is just one more cost of doing business and is in no way an impediment, merely a small financial nuisance.

For me the fan (Mets although this is not sour grapes), some of the enjoyment of watching games goes away when some teams can in effect become all-star teams, picking up all of the best players simply because they can and most others can’t.

Let’s level the playing field so that the job of GM and head of minor league development become relevant again, as opposed to what has become relevant today. The size of the owners checkbook. Drafting quality prospects and bringing them up through the system has for the most part become a lost art. Let’s bring it back.

Although the Mets did pick up a couple of good ones, let’s look into a salary cap!

From experience, I can tell you that picking up women in regular places like these can be much better than being out in a club. For one, she’s less likely to have her guard up and shoot you down like she would in a club. And, you can make your approach seem much more natural to her as well.

2. Practice flirting with women throughout the day, even when you are not set on picking her up.

Just because you don’t intend to pick up women that day, does not mean that you should let an opportunity just get by you. And when you really want to build up your skills to pick up and attract women, the more practice that you get, the better. After a while, it becomes old hat and you wind up being one of those guys that women think of as just being a natural flirt. So, even if your intention is not to pick up a girl, don’t let that stop you from flirting with her for a little while.

3. Understand that women are not nearly as put off by a smooth guy, as long as your game is tight.

Another false assumption that men tend to have is that women are put off by a guy that acts smooth. Well, the truth is more like this. They are put off by guys that try too hard or come off as being pretty lame when they are trying to act smooth. If you want to be successful picking up and attracting women, then you have to get past the idea that women are somehow put off by this, and accept the fact that as long as your game is tight, she will be flattered if nothing else.

Joe Nathan Foundation Makes $half Million Donation to Joe’s Alma Mater, Stony Brook University

The All-Star closer for the Minnesota Twins and Stony Brook graduate (BS ’97) has made a $500,000 lead gift to the University’s Department of Athletics. In recognition of the sizeable gift, the State University of New York has announced that the new field will be named “Joe Nathan Field.”

“My experiences as a part of the Stony Brook athletics family helped get me to where I am today,” remarked Nathan. “I feel extremely fortunate to be playing baseball as a professional athlete and feel strongly about supporting the growth of the Stony Brook baseball program. Coach (Matt) Senk has built an extremely successful program; one with which I’m very proud to be affiliated. I look forward to following and supporting our baseball program to even greater success in the years to come,” he added.

While playing with the Stony Brook University Seawolves, Nathan was a two-time Academic All-American and was also inducted into the Stony Brook Athletics Hall of Fame in December 2006, when he also became the first former Stony Brook student-athlete to have his jersey number retired.

“Joe Nathan’s generosity and leadership in making this wonderful gift underscores the importance of the spirit of philanthropy that is growing among our alumni,” said Fiore. “As much as Joe was a talented collegiate athlete and a high achiever as a student; more importantly he is a remarkable human being. We are very proud of Joe and are thrilled to name our baseball field in his honor. It will serve as a lasting tribute to his continued love for his experience as a Stony Brook student-athlete,” he added.

Nathan’s former coach, Matt Senk, added “Joe’s support of our baseball program is greatly appreciated. He embodies all the core values we try to instill in our student-athletes; commitment, passion, pride, respect and swagger. Current and future Stony Brook baseball student-athletes will benefit from playing in a facility which Joe’s gift will help build. Future Stony Brook recruits will be able to look forward to playing in one of the finest facilities in the northeast.”

The donation is the first major endowment provided by the Joe Nathan Foundation, commonly referred to as Save-It. Last year, the foundation launched a Joe Nathan web site (www.JoeNathan.com). The site features a Joe Nathan blog. An RSS feed of the American League All-Star closer’s season and the latest photos of Joe and his teammates.

This month, the foundation will be offering merchandise for sale on the site. All proceeds from the sale of the autographed pictures, jerseys, shirts and caps will go directly to the “Save-It” foundation.

“Finding success as a major ball player has been terrific,” said Joe. “I have met so many wonderful fans during my college years on Long Island, minor league days down south, my time in San Francisco and of course, in Minnesota. The foundation gives my fans a chance to share in my success and for all of us to give back to our communities,” he said

“Congratulations to Joe Nathan on his great successes while at Stony Brook as a student-athlete and as an all-star pitcher for the Minnesota Twins,” said Richard Nasti, Chair of the Stony Brook Council. “His decision to share those successes with his alma mater, and for the University to name the field in his honor, is a cherished opportunity. Whitewater Rafting in Colorado, Setting Up for an Exciting 2007 Vacation Season

The snow is melting. The rivers are swollen with the fresh spring run-off. The current is swift. The waves have grown in size and frequency. This marks the beginning of the 2007 whitewater rafting season on the Arkansas River in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains.

The Upper Arkansas River basin received abundant snowfall this winter offering whitewater enthusiasts’ ample water for the upcoming whitewater season. 2007 promises to be one of the best rafting seasons in years as the Rocky Mountain west recovers from drought conditions. Colorado’s rivers primarily depend on the snow pack for their water supply. Peak native run-off usually occurs sometime in late May and June providing the most exciting whitewater opportunities. The Arkansas River is unique among Colorado’s Rivers in that its’ water resources are managed by the “Voluntary Flow Program”. Water is stored in three different reservoirs at the headwaters near Leadville. The entities that own and manage the waters that feed the Arkansas River have coordinated with Colorado State Parks and the Arkansas River’s outfitters to supplement the native flow when the snowmelt subsides. This provides the Arkansas River with enough water late in the season to allow whitewater operations well into September.

The Arkansas River in southern Colorado saw 282,381 commercial rafting visitors in 2006 up 3.97% from 2005. The numbers continue to grow as more and more travelers are realizing this is a sport that anyone can participate in under the direction of a qualified guide and licensed outfitter. The Arkansas River in southern Colorado is one of the most user-friendly rivers anywhere in the world. It offers whitewater rafting trips suitable for everyone. Whitewater adventure trips are a great family or group activity and also appeal to the avid outdoors adventure enthusiasts. Visitors can choose from half-day excursions to multi-day overnight river adventures. The Arkansas provides over 110 miles of whitewater with varying levels of difficulty. Trips range from class II scenic floats to class V extreme trips through the world-renowned Royal Gorge. Many class III trips are suitable for children as young as 6 years old or at least 50 lbs. Size requirements must be met in order to provide them with proper fitting safety gear. The ability to swim well is not required for easier runs. However, it is mandatory for all class IV and above rapids.

Rafting trips are very affordable with prices ranging from $30 to $599 per person depending on trip options and duration. The outfitter provides all river gear and some trips include riverside lunches, or multiple meals if you’re on an overnight trip. It is important to have properly fitted PFD’s (personal flotation device), and helmets. During the peak run-off wetsuits are mandatory as the water temperatures can be as low as 40°. Splash Jackets, heavy-duty windbreakers are also provided to help eliminate the wind chill. During the warmer summer month’s swimsuits are the attire of choice. Sport sandals, water socks, or an old pair of tennis shoes are the suggested footwear. Contact lenses are not recommended. If you choose to wear eyeglasses or sunglasses bring retaining cords such as chums or croakies to prevent loosing them to the river. Plan on bringing waterproof sunscreen as Colorado’s high altitude lends itself to the potential for sunburn. With all of the appropriate equipment and skilled guides, whitewater rafting is one of the most fun and exciting means of getting into Colorado’s scenic backcountry.

Commercial river guides operating in Colorado are required to meet minimum state standards. Certain sections of river have more stringent requirements that guides must meet before navigating commercial passenger rafts. All guides are required to hold current CPR/First Aid certifications, and many exceed these requirements with Wilderness First Responder certifications. River guides in Colorado undergo extensive training in river safety techniques and river rescue scenarios enabling them to provide their guests with a safe and exciting trip. River guides are some of the most entertaining and colorful folks you’ll ever meet. They guide as a result of their passion for the sport, and the thrill of passing this passion on to their guests. Most guides are not only expert boatmen, they also boast a working knowledge of the areas history and ecology. A guide’s salary is modest at best for the amount of responsibility bestowed upon them. Twelve to fourteen hour days are common during the peak season. Gratuities are graciously accepted as a show of appreciation for their hard work in providing their guests with an exciting and memorable experience.
