Joe Nathan Foundation Makes $half Million Donation to Joe’s Alma Mater, Stony Brook University

The All-Star closer for the Minnesota Twins and Stony Brook graduate (BS ‘97) has made a $500,000 lead gift to the University’s Department of Athletics. In recognition of the sizeable gift, the State University of New York has announced that the new field will be named “Joe Nathan Field.”

“My experiences as a part of the Stony Brook athletics family helped get me to where I am today,” remarked Nathan. “I feel extremely fortunate to be playing baseball as a professional athlete and feel strongly about supporting the growth of the Stony Brook baseball program. Coach (Matt) Senk has built an extremely successful program; one with which I’m very proud to be affiliated. I look forward to following and supporting our baseball program to even greater success in the years to come,” he added.

While playing with the Stony Brook University Seawolves, Nathan was a two-time Academic All-American and was also inducted into the Stony Brook Athletics Hall of Fame in December 2006, when he also became the first former Stony Brook student-athlete to have his jersey number retired.

“Joe Nathan’s generosity and leadership in making this wonderful gift underscores the importance of the spirit of philanthropy that is growing among our alumni,” said Fiore. “As much as Joe was a talented collegiate athlete and a high achiever as a student; more importantly he is a remarkable human being. We are very proud of Joe and are thrilled to name our baseball field in his honor. It will serve as a lasting tribute to his continued love for his experience as a Stony Brook student-athlete,” he added.

Nathan’s former coach, Matt Senk, added “Joe’s support of our baseball program is greatly appreciated. He embodies all the core values we try to instill in our student-athletes; commitment, passion, pride, respect and swagger. Current and future Stony Brook baseball student-athletes will benefit from playing in a facility which Joe’s gift will help build. Future Stony Brook recruits will be able to look forward to playing in one of the finest facilities in the northeast.”

The donation is the first major endowment provided by the Joe Nathan Foundation, commonly referred to as Save-It. Last year, the foundation launched a Joe Nathan web site (www.JoeNathan.com). The site features a Joe Nathan blog. An RSS feed of the American League All-Star closer’s season and the latest photos of Joe and his teammates.

This month, the foundation will be offering merchandise for sale on the site. All proceeds from the sale of the autographed pictures, jerseys, shirts and caps will go directly to the “Save-It” foundation.

“Finding success as a major ball player has been terrific,” said Joe. “I have met so many wonderful fans during my college years on Long Island, minor league days down south, my time in San Francisco and of course, in Minnesota. The foundation gives my fans a chance to share in my success and for all of us to give back to our communities,” he said

“Congratulations to Joe Nathan on his great successes while at Stony Brook as a student-athlete and as an all-star pitcher for the Minnesota Twins,” said Richard Nasti, Chair of the Stony Brook Council. “His decision to share those successes with his alma mater, and for the University to name the field in his honor, is a cherished opportunity. I congratulate President Shirley StrumKenny, Director of Athletics Jim Fiore and Head Coach Matt Senk for sharing in this vision with Joe and helping to create a great opportunity for current and future baseball student-athletes at Stony Brook.”

Whitewater Rafting in Colorado, Setting Up for an Exciting 2007 Vacation Season

The snow is melting. The rivers are swollen with the fresh spring run-off. The current is swift. The waves have grown in size and frequency. This marks the beginning of the 2007 whitewater rafting season on the Arkansas River in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains.

The Upper Arkansas River basin received abundant snowfall this winter offering whitewater enthusiasts’ ample water for the upcoming whitewater season. 2007 promises to be one of the best rafting seasons in years as the Rocky Mountain west recovers from drought conditions. Colorado’s rivers primarily depend on the snow pack for their water supply. Peak native run-off usually occurs sometime in late May and June providing the most exciting whitewater opportunities. The Arkansas River is unique among Colorado’s Rivers in that its’ water resources are managed by the “Voluntary Flow Program”. Water is stored in three different reservoirs at the headwaters near Leadville. The entities that own and manage the waters that feed the Arkansas River have coordinated with Colorado State Parks and the Arkansas River’s outfitters to supplement the native flow when the snowmelt subsides. This provides the Arkansas River with enough water late in the season to allow whitewater operations well into September.

The Arkansas River in southern Colorado saw 282,381 commercial rafting visitors in 2006 up 3.97% from 2005. The numbers continue to grow as more and more travelers are realizing this is a sport that anyone can participate in under the direction of a qualified guide and licensed outfitter. The Arkansas River in southern Colorado is one of the most user-friendly rivers anywhere in the world. It offers whitewater rafting trips suitable for everyone. Whitewater adventure trips are a great family or group activity and also appeal to the avid outdoors adventure enthusiasts. Visitors can choose from half-day excursions to multi-day overnight river adventures. The Arkansas provides over 110 miles of whitewater with varying levels of difficulty. Trips range from class II scenic floats to class V extreme trips through the world-renowned Royal Gorge. Many class III trips are suitable for children as young as 6 years old or at least 50 lbs. Size requirements must be met in order to provide them with proper fitting safety gear. The ability to swim well is not required for easier runs. However, it is mandatory for all class IV and above rapids.

Rafting trips are very affordable with prices ranging from $30 to $599 per person depending on trip options and duration. The outfitter provides all river gear and some trips include riverside lunches, or multiple meals if you’re on an overnight trip. It is important to have properly fitted PFD’s (personal flotation device), and helmets. During the peak run-off wetsuits are mandatory as the water temperatures can be as low as 40°. Splash Jackets, heavy-duty windbreakers are also provided to help eliminate the wind chill. During the warmer summer month’s swimsuits are the attire of choice. Sport sandals, water socks, or an old pair of tennis shoes are the suggested footwear. Contact lenses are not recommended. If you choose to wear eyeglasses or sunglasses bring retaining cords such as chums or croakies to prevent loosing them to the river. Plan on bringing waterproof sunscreen as Colorado’s high altitude lends itself to the potential for sunburn. With all of the appropriate equipment and skilled guides, whitewater rafting is one of the most fun and exciting means of getting into Colorado’s scenic backcountry.

Commercial river guides operating in Colorado are required to meet minimum state standards. Certain sections of river have more stringent requirements that guides must meet before navigating commercial passenger rafts. All guides are required to hold current CPR/First Aid certifications, and many exceed these requirements with Wilderness First Responder certifications. River guides in Colorado undergo extensive training in river safety techniques and river rescue scenarios enabling them to provide their guests with a safe and exciting trip. River guides are some of the most entertaining and colorful folks you’ll ever meet. They guide as a result of their passion for the sport, and the thrill of passing this passion on to their guests. Most guides are not only expert boatmen, they also boast a working knowledge of the areas history and ecology. A guide’s salary is modest at best for the amount of responsibility bestowed upon them. Twelve to fourteen hour days are common during the peak season. Gratuities are graciously accepted as a show of appreciation for their hard work in providing their guests with an exciting and memorable experience.

Get out there this summer and experience it for yourself. Whitewater rafting can provide you and your family and friends with fun and exciting memories that will last a lifetime! See you on the river!

An Inexplicable Charm

And the most glorious exploits do not always furnish us with the clearest discoveries of virtue or vice in men; sometimes a matter of less moment . . . informs us better of their characters and inclinations, than the most famous sieges, the greatest armaments, or the bloodiest battles whatsoever.

–Plutarch

The air smelled like rotten eggs. The gunsmoke had settled since the end of the fighting, but its sulfurous stench hung on in the hot, humid atmosphere. To the officers of the Continental Army, it was a further reminder of an opportunity lost, thanks to the bungling (some said it was treachery) of Major General Charles Lee.

This was the aftermath of the Battle of Monmouth Court House, June 28, 1778, among the hills and hollows of central New Jersey.

More than 700 men, about half Continentals and half redcoats and Hessians, were missing or lay scattered, wounded or dead, across the sprawling battlefield. It had been the longest action of the war, over nine hours, and one of the largest. For the Americans it was also the most frustrating day’s work of the whole struggle for independence. A chance to strike a real blow against the enemy, by mauling his rear guard on its retreat across New Jersey, had been thrown away, or so the American officers believed.

As night fell over the ghastly scene, the Americans did not know that the British were already planning to creep away. They muffled the wheels of their wagons, abandoned their dead and many of their wounded, and themselves were soon abandoned by hundreds of deserters. When the sun rose the next morning — to produce another savagely hot, suffocating day with temperatures in the upper nineties — the Continental Army would hold the field. According to the customs of war, that made the Americans the winners.

The last cannonade ended at about five in the afternoon. The major generals ordered their brigade commanders to round up stragglers, reorganize their troops, and place them in defensive positions. Men fanned out to plunder the dead and to retrieve American and British wounded and take them to the rear. That night everyone who had fought collapsed on the ground. Soldiers and officers alike were exhausted, not so much by the fighting as by the brutal heat — many of the casualties on both sides had fallen to sunstroke and thirst rather than gunfire.

The division commanders trudged toward headquarters, which meant wherever the commander in chief happened to be. He was atop a steep rise overlooking the scene of the last stages of the action. One of them was Nathanael Greene, a sturdy, fighting Quaker and the army’s most dependable major general.

Greene found the commander in chief as dusk was turning into dark. General George Washington was asleep on a cloak spread on the ground. The boy, Major General Lafayette, lay curled up beside him, also asleep on the general’s cloak.

The middle-aged man and the teenage boy had met less than a year before, at the end of another hot, stifling day — Philadelphia in August. In the months since, they had drawn together like two orphans in a storm, which had first blown over them in different places — one in the Old World, the other in the New — in 1775.

The Quaker soldier shared the opinion of the American commanders that this day would have gone better if the original plan had been followed. The young, aggressive Lafayette should have remained in command of the advance force rather than being superseded by Lee. Washington should not have been forced to charge onto the scene and take personal command. Instead, Lafayette’s energies had been wasted. Washington had found a disaster in the making and turned it into, at best, a tactical draw.

But any regrets about what might have been were banished by the touching scene before him, Washington and Lafayette asleep together. Having watched the attachment grow between these two over the months, Greene also found the youngster endearing. He had once told his wife that the boy was irresistible, owing to “an inexplicable charm.” Nothing could be more charming, in these grisly, stinking surroundings, than this affectionate, familial picture — not so much two exhausted soldiers as a father and son sharing the innocent comfort of sleep.

Greene spread his own cloak under a nearby tree, vowing to drive off anyone who might disturb the slumbering pair. But the day and battle just past proved to be too much even for his iron constitution. Sleep soon settled over him, as it already had over Washington and Lafayette, together in peace amid the madness of war.

Custom T-Shirts for all Purposes

There are many uses for custom T-shirts in today’s world.  From polo shirts emblazoned with a company name to personalized tees with team names on the front and names  and numbers on the back, custom T-shirts are at home practically anywhere.

Businesses use custom T-shirts as a casual “uniform” for their employees, especially those that deal with the public.  A specific logo and color will help to build a solid brand image with the business’s customers, and also serve as additional advertising when the employees wear the shirts outside of the business.  Many businesses also offer an additional style of customize T-shirts to their customers, perhaps just a little different from the employee’s tees, and offer them in special promotions.

  1. The team name is generally on the front of the shirt in sports team shirts, but again, whatever the team asks for can be accommodated.

Charity functions often have custom T-shirts designed specifically for the event.  This gives the volunteer team a cohesive look and helps bond people who many times have never met before that day.  Many often use the tees as giveaways for donations as well.  These T-shirts are worn all year long by volunteers and attendees alike, helping to build awareness for the function and the cause that it supports.

Foot races and cycling events are another place where a wide variety of custom T-shirts are utilized.  Depending upon the event, the sponsors might opt for the name of the event and all of the sponsors on the back of the shirt, or even personalize it with each participant’s name.

Bars and night clubs have been very quick to catch the custom T-shirt fever, as they realize how much additional business and traffic it drives when people run about town taking care of errands with the name of the club on their back. Inevitably, conversations are struck up and the wearer will most often give the club rave reviews.  After all, if they didn’t love the place, why would they wear their shirt? These shirts can be basic, with just the information about the club, or special ones can be designed around certain events.  The designs themselves can also be basic, or quite detailed and artistic, depending upon the image the club is after.

In all cases, custom T-shirts can be ordered from companies who do the majority of their business online, thereby saving their customers the added costs incurred by brick and mortar operations.  One of the very best Custom T-shirt companies is Under the Influence Tees. You can check out their website at http://www.utitees.com and design the shirts you need for any occasion.  The design team is very helpful, turn-around time is quick, and shipping is FREE on all orders over $40!

PETER DRUCKER –“Wherever you see a successful business someone once made a courageous decision.”

PETER ERBE –“The caterpillar trusts his maker that all is well. He does not ding to his old garment and thus is transformed into a magnificent butterfly There is no pain, it is a natural transmutation. So it is with us. As the chrysalis is the bridge between caterpillar arid butterfly so is True perception the bridge between separation and Oneness. We are transmuting into a new state of Being. Clinging to our caterpillar stage, our old ways of judgment, we shall never learn to fly into the dawn of a new day.”

PETER F DRUCKER –”We know nothing about motivation. All we can do is write books about it.”

Time is totally perishable and cannot be stored. Yesterday’s time is gone forever, and will never come back. Time is always in short supply there is no substitute for time. Everything requires time. AH work takes place in, and uses up time. Yet most people take for granted this unique, irreplaceable and necessary resource.”

PETER F DRUCKER –“The purpose of business is to create and keep a customer.”

PETER F DRUCKER –“We know nothing about motivation. All we can do is writing books about it.”

PETER F. DRUCKER –“Unless commitment is made, there are only promises and hopes; but no plans.”

PETER O’TOOLE –“When did I realise I was God? I was praying and suddenly realised I was talking to myself.”

PETER RUSSELL –“ Inner evolution is not an aside to the overall process of evolution. Conscious inner evolution is the particular phase of evolution that we, in our corner of the universe, are currently passing through. From this perspective, the movement towards a social super organism and the mystical urge to know an inner unity are complementary aspects of the same single process, the thrust of evolution towards higher degrees of wholeness.”

In the depth of the deep there is space for the light to enter but not the door to escape. In the roaming mind, there is space for the quietude by tapas of fortitude. In the emerald blue silence there is space for awareful existence of the fullness of ananda.
