“black Kids Don’t Read” Last Words Before Retail Graveyard

Certain principles of life and business never change. Like with the law of gravity, for example, its just plain better to know how it works even if youre not sure why.

I was reminded of this last week when the mens fashion clothing trade magazine Daily News Record (DNR) ran a story (Retail Graveyard, October 29) about a guy named Peter Divietro in Sloatsburg, N.Y., who annually for Halloween decorates his front yard with tombstones to commemorate dead retail stores.

That in turn reminded me of a failed chain of hip-hop clothing stores in Chicago called The Lark. Do you remember The Lark?

The owner was Lenny Rothschild. I met him on a sales visit at his suburban Chicago office one summer day in 2003 while my company was still making Black Fives throwback jerseys for wholesale distribution to stores. The Lark was an important account because it commanded the urban fashion retail market in Chicago.

FLYING HIGH; WITH AN UPSCALE APPROACH TO MERCHANDISING AND CUSTOMER SERVICE, THE LARK SOARS IN CHICAGOS URBAN MARKET, read a headline in DNR earlier that year. As Lenny Rothschild pilots his silver Mercedes-Benz coupe around Chicago, his love for the city is obvious, is how that article began (DNR, February 10, 2003).

If you wanted your goods in Chicago, you had to sell Lenny. All the biggest streetwear brands loved him, and Lenny was the gatekeeper who could make or break small, upcoming apparel brands like Black Fives. And he knew it.

Lenny was smart, and he wanted people to know it. His Harvard diploma hung prominently on the wall. Lenny delighted in explaining how to introduce new merchandise to coincide with welfare check and tax refund arrival dates, to maximize sales to his most faithful customer base, low-income inner-city residents. His stores were concentrated in those areas.

I showed and pitched my unique, attractive, high-quality, economically priced jerseys and matching fitted hats. Lenny looked them over and shrugged, and asked me how I expected anyone to know about the history of these Black Fives teams and players. I showed him some big press clippings and also explained that each jersey comes with its own informative hang tag, reminiscent of a collectible vintage basketball card, with images on one side and history text on the other. I handed him one of the cards.

This wont matter because black kids dont read, said Lenny.

Today, when I think of the immutable principles that work in life and in business, I think of two of them that applied to Lenny that day. One is that how you do anything is how you do everything. The other is that what you focus on expands. The trick is that these principles work the same whether in the negative or in the positive realm.

Lenny gave me an $8,000 order that afternoon. I shipped it, but what he didnt realize is that his loyal customers had already begun a quiet revolt. Instead of buying $300 retro jerseys like the kind The Lark was selling, his clientele had flipped the script, now buying plain white tee shirts to make the same fashion statement at three for $10. It was the revenge of the lowly urban consumer. It happened across the country. It was swift and it was bloody. Many urban retailers didnt make it.

Within two weeks, Lenny returned his Black Fives order unopened.

Whenever I shopped at The Lark, customer service didnt exist. Young African American employees were distant and resentful, usually the sign of low wages, cheap thinking, and lack of appreciation by management.

Not to pick on Lenny, because he wasnt alone in this approach to the so-called loyal inner-city consumer, but didnt you have that experience too, nearly everywhere you shopped?

By 2005, The Lark lay buried in the retail graveyard. AFTER THE LARK: MORE HIP, NO HOP; CLOSING HIS HIP-HOP APPAREL CHAIN, RETAILER OPENS ESSEX5, DEVOTED TO PREMIUM DENIM, SPORTSWEAR, read the DNR headline this time. The Lark is grounded, the article began. Lenny Rothschild has closed all 10 of The Lark stores he owned and operated, making the once-high-flying hip-hop apparel specialty chain a thing of the past (DNR, December 19, 2005).

What Ill always remember about The Lark are Lenny Rothschilds famous (last) words: black kids dont read.

The principles of life and business always work the same. Beliefs do become reality. Thoughts lead to feelings lead to actions lead to results. This works both ways, in this case to the advantage of the consumer and to the dismay of the retailer. Lenny couldve avoided it all if there had been any books like T. Harv Ekers brilliant Secrets of the Millionaire Mind available for him to read at the time. But there werent. And he didnt.

Thus, the Larks tombstone might have the epitaph, Gee, I guess black kids read after all.

Was Lenny right? Or do all kids read less? Or is it only online reading they do? Or something else? Whats your opinion?

City of New York

New York City, officially named the City of New York, is the most populous city in the United States, and the most densely populated major city in North America. The city is at the center of international finance, politics, entertainment, and culture, and is one of the world’s major global cities (along with London, Tokyo and Paris) with a virtually unrivaled collection of museums, galleries, performance venues, media outlets, international corporations, and stock exchanges. The city is also home to the United Nations, along with all of the international missions associated with it.

History

Long before the arrival of European settlers, the New York City area was inhabited by the Lenape people, including such tribes as the Manahattoes, Canarsies and Raritan. Major events in New York history include¢ In 1524 the first European explorer enters New York Harbor¢ European settlement begins with the following the 1609 voyage of Henry Hudson¢ Founding of the Dutch fur trading settlement in Lower Manhattan in 1613 later called New Amsterdam¢ English ships captured the city without struggle in 1664¢ The Dutch formally ceded New York to the English in the Treaty of Breda at the conclusion of the Second Anglo-Dutch War in 1667¢ The city was renamed New York, after James, Duke of York, and became a royal colony in 1685¢ After the Civil War, the rate of immigration from Europe grew steeply, and New York became the first stop for millions seeking a new and better life in the United States, a role acknowledged by the dedication of the Statue of Liberty in 1886¢ In two separate actions in 1874 and 1895, New York City (and New York County) annexed sections of southern Westchester County known as the Bronx¢ In 1898, New York City took the political form in which it exists to this day.¢ 9/11 changed the political map of the worldPlace of interest

Tourism is a major local industry, with hundreds of attractions and 39 million tourists visiting the city each year on average. Many visitors make it a point to visit Ground Zero, the Empire State Building, Times Square, Radio City Music Hall, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Wall Street, United Nations Headquarters, the American Museum of Natural History, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Fifth Avenue, and the Brooklyn Bridge, among other attractions. There are over 28,000 acres (113 km²) of parkland found throughout New York City, comprising over 1,700 separate parks and playgrounds. The best known of these is Central Park, which is one of the finest examples of landscape architecture in the world, as well as a major source of recreation for New Yorkers and tourists alike. Other major parks in the city include Riverside Park, Battery Park, Bryant Park, Prospect Park, Flushing Meadow-Corona Park, Washington Square Park, and Forest Park.

Museums & Art Galleries

New York is a city of great museums with the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s assemblage of historic art, the Museum of Modern Art and Guggenheim Museum’s 20th century collection, and the American Museum of Natural History and its Hayden Planetarium focusing on the sciences. There are also many smaller specialty museums, from El Museo del Barrio with a focus on Latin American cultures to the Cooper-Hewitt National Museum of Design. A number of the city’s museums are located along the Museum Mile section of Fifth Avenue.

In addition to these museums, the city is also home to a vast array of spaces for opera, symphony, and dance performances. The largest of these is Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, which is actually a complex of buildings housing 12 separate companies, including the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Opera, the New York City Ballet, and Jazz at Lincoln Center. Other notable performance halls include Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. New York City boasts a highly active and influential theater district, which is centered around Times Square in Manhattan. It serves both as the center of the American theater industry, and as a major attraction for visitors from around the world. Broadway theaters are considered to be of the highest quality in the world.

Shopping

Shopping is popular with many visitors, with Fifth Avenue being a famous shopping corridor for luxury items. Macy’s, the nation’s largest department store, and the surrounding area of Herald Square are a major destination for more moderately-priced goods. In recent years 23rd Street has become a major location for “big-box” retailers. In southern Manhattan, Greenwich Village is home to hundreds of independent music and book stores, while the East Village continues to prevail as purveyors of all things “strange” and unusual which you can’t find anywhere else. The “diamond district” (located on 47th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues) is the city’s main location for jewelry shopping, and SoHo, formerly the center of the New York art scene, is now famous for high-priced clothing boutiques, and the art galleries are now concentrated in Chelsea. There are also large shopping districts found in Downtown Brooklyn and along Queens Boulevard in Queens.

Food & Drink

New York is the best restaurant town in USA and one of the finest in the world. New York has literally thousands of restaurants to choose from (more than 25,000, in fact), encompassing nearly every cuisine in the world. Some of the big names are Eleven Madison Park, The River Café, Boat Basin Café, Veritas. Like restaurants, thousands of bars and cafes are there in the city. A few old noteworthy among those are: McSorleys Old Ale House, Revival, Push Café and White Horse Tavern.

Universities

New York City is served by the publicly run City University of New York (CUNY), the largest urban university in the United States, which has a number of campuses throughout the five boroughs. The city is also home to a number of other institutions of higher learning, some of national or even international reputation, including Columbia University, Fordham University, Manhattan College, New York University, the Juilliard School, The Cooper Union, Marymount Manhattan College and The New School. New York City is also a major center of academic medicine. Manhattan contains the campuses of the world-class Rockefeller University, Weill Cornell Medical College, and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, as well as Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and NYU Medical Center and their medical schools. New York City is home to several of the nation’s top schools of art and design, including Pratt Institute, the School of Visual Arts, the Fashion Institute of Technology, and Parsons School of Design

Sports

Although in much of the rest of the country American football has become the most popular professional sport, in New York City baseball arguably still stirs the most passion and interest. A “Subway Series” between city teams is a time of great excitement, and any World Series championship by either the New York Yankees or the New York Mets is considered to be worthy of the highest celebration, including a ticker-tape parade for the victorious team.

Hotels & Accommodation

The City of New York is known as the “city that never sleeps”, but its visitors have to. The city hosts a large number of accommodations options.

Luxury Hotels

New York has many “grand dames,” classic elegant hotels that have been around for years and endured majestically. The St. Regis, the Waldorf, Tribeca Grand Hotel, Ritz-Carlton New York, Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers – are some to mention about.

Budget Hotels

Besides all those luxury hotels, a large number of budget hotels are available in New York City. They are comfortable, homely and light weight for the pocket. Some of them to mention are – The Whitehouse Hotel of New York, The Pioneer, Chelsea Center, Guesthouse and Harlem YMCA. Except these hotels and guesthouses, Skyline Hotel and Travel Inn are rare exception among affordable hotels for their services and facilities.

Tours and Sightseeing

To know and see the New York City with no tension way, a number of tour operators are there for travelers help. These tours contain city and outskirt of the city sightseeing. Tours may vary from its contents or theme. It may be a helicopter tour of Big Apple or may be a double-decker bus tour. Some fair tour agencies are there in the city. Tours can be booked from tour agencies or some hotels arrange them for its patrons. Another easy way to book any of these tours is online tour ticket booking. Some helpful websites for this purpose are:

Transport

The airport authority owns and operates the four major airports in the New York City area, John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in Jamaica, Newark Liberty International Airport in Newark, New Jersey, La Guardia Airport in Flushing, and Teeterboard Airport in Teeterboard, New Jersey.Taxicabs are operated by private companies and licensed by the New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission. Other than cabs, New York City has a mass transit system. Unlike most of America’s car-oriented urban areas, public transportation is the common mode of travel for the majority of New York City residents. The city is served by an extensive network of parkways and expressways, including four primary Interstate Highways enter the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area. The world-famous New York City Subway is operated by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). It is the most extensive subway system in the world. The subway system connects all boroughs except Staten Island, which is served by the Staten Island Railway via the free Staten Island Ferry. In addition to these, city residents rely on hundreds of bus lines, both publicly and privately operated. Many private ferries are run by NY Waterway, which provides several lines across the Hudson River, New York Water Taxi, with lines connecting Brooklyn and Manhattan, and other operators

Wedding Gift Ideas to Delight the Happy Couple

You have been invited to a wedding and don’t know what to give the happy couple. Of course you can always buy something from their registry and have it wrapped at the store. This is the simplest solution and will certainly be appreciated; after all, most couples would not buy their registry items for themselves, and use this list as a special ‘wish list’ for things they would love to have. It also guarantees you will get them something they really want and which will reflect their personal tastes.

For other ideas to get you started if you would like to be a little creative, consider the following 8 tips:

1. A luxurious gift basket is always appreciated. Fill it with decadent chocolates or imported foods; some of the more obscure or unusual bridal registry items, or linens and towels for the couple. Just be sure not to include anything perishable if the couple will be taking a honeymoon – no one wants to come back to spoiled fruit or flowers!

2. Monogrammed towels or robes are a luxury item many people – especially young couples just starting out – would not think to buy for themselves. If you are ordering towels, be sure they co-ordinate with the planned décor, or stick with classics like white or cream.

3. Give the gift of a day or weekend of indulgence with a gift certificate. A spa or romantic getaway for two is just what they will love after weeks or months of busy planning and trying to please everyone around them, especially if they are not taking a honeymoon. They will appreciate your thoughtfulness in helping them have some alone time to remember why they are doing all this!

4. If the couple are going on a honeymoon, call their destination and inquire as to any special trips or treatments you could pre-purchase for them. For example, maybe you could buy them a couples massage, a champagne dinner for two on the beach, or a special trip arranged just for the two of them. You can include a nice note in an envelope to give at the wedding – just be sure you let their destination hotel know who the gift-giver was, because they likely will not you’re your wedding envelope until they return.

5. Alternatively, purchase some traveler’s checks for couples embarking on a honeymoon. Weddings and honeymoons can be expensive, and a little extra spending money just for special things while they are away will be greatly appreciated. They can use them for anything they want, and will love your thoughtfulness.

6. Give the couple the gift of a little romantic adventure some time in the future, with a gift certificate for a balloon ride, or perhaps a helicopter tour of your city or the local beach or mountains…something unusual that they may not have thought to do themselves.

7. Make a gift of matching his and hers items and tailor it to the couple. The possibilities are endless; golf items for golf-lovers, his-and-hers cosmetics or toiletries; scarves or jewelry…

8. Give a personal gift that showcases the history of the bride- and groom-to-be. For example, compile a collection of photos of the two of them and have them framed, or if they met at a local landmark or event, get them tickets and souvenirs from that special time (for example, if they met at a baseball game, get them tickets to an upcoming game and matching baseball jerseys).

These are just a few ideas to get you started. The best thing to keep in mind is to consider the personalities of the couple you are buying for, rather than what you yourself might like. Happy hunting!

Women and Guns

A few Weeks ago, there was an article in the Bucks County Courier Times about women protecting themselves. It talks about guns and self-defense classes, but also mentions tasers, pepper spray and mace. We felt it was an appropriate topic for everyone to read. Excerpts from the article follow below:

Should a woman carry a gun for protection?

was originally written by MANASEE WAGH at Bucks County Courier Times.

Half of Steve Rementer’s students at the shooting range are women these days. In fact, he has designed his course around teaching women how to shoot firearms in self-defense.

“If a woman can protect herself, it’s the first line of defense. She is 30 to 40 percent more likely to be attacked than a man,” said Rementer, a police firearms instructor at Pistol People, a shooting range in Bensalem, and a Philadelphia police officer for 30 years. He said he’s met many women who have been raped and attacked.

“Women are better students than men. They are more focused, and they don’t want to be victimized. Every woman I could teach, I would.” The National Sporting Goods Association reported In 2006 that 50 percent more women are now target shooting. The association attributed rising gun ownership in part to self-defense.

The National Rifle Association has several women’s programs, including teaching women how to shoot. Web sites selling defense gear to women have been popping up sellings tasers, stun guns and pepper spray. Three women at southern university campuses were slain within one week recently.

The body of Lauren Burk, 18, an Auburn University student, was found five miles from the campus. Eve Marie Carson, a 22-year-old attending the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, was shot and killed. And Katharine Wood, 24, a senior at the University of Arkansas, was shot dead in her off-campus apartment.

Last April, 32 people at Virginia Tech were murdered by a mentally unstable gunman.A failed 2006 bill would have allowed students who have a concealed weapon permit to carry firearms anywhere on a Virginia campus. The Bureau of Justice’s research shows that in 2005 alone, 5.2 million crimes of violence were committed in this country.

In Bucks County, more people are getting gun permits. In 2006, 4,874 gun permits were issued. The number jumped to 5,392 in 2007, according to the sheriff’s office. In the first two months of this year, the county issued nearly 1,000 permits. While Sheriff Edward J. Donnelly did not have gender statistics, he said the percentage of gun permits issued to women probably has stayed at about 10 percent to 11 percent for years.

People interviewed in Lower Bucks expressed differing opinions about gun permits for women.

William Miller of Levittown said he worries when his girlfriend goes to Philadelphia alone.

“I recently told her to take a can of Mace into the city. It’s dangerous,” he said. Some said that people would face less risk if strangers think they may be carrying lethal weapons.

“We have the right to bear arms by the Constitution,” said John Chester of Trenton. “Law-abiding citizens are sane enough to use them just for self-defense, as opposed to criminals. Law enforcement can’t be everywhere. You need the ability to fight back.”

However, Susan Perry, who was visiting Yardley from New Jersey, said she is against women carrying guns. “They should bring Mace, or anything they can use to protect themselves.”

Her husband said even a knife would be better than carrying a gun. “And never walk alone. Take a defensive action course,” he said. Some agreed avoiding risk is best.

“There’s safety in numbers,” said Lucy Sanderson of Falls. “I’m not sure if a woman should be carrying a gun. And education is the key — how to defend yourself besides using a weapon.”

She liked a recent citizens’ police academy workshop in Bristol Township, which taught people ways to avoid an attack. Like checking the back seat of your car before you climb in and not bringing your pocketbook into a mall during the holiday shopping rush.Brian Buchanan of Bristol Township agreed.

“When someone has a weapon, it’s too risky. I’m not in favor of people arming themselves. That’s something for law enforcement,” he said. As the brother of five sisters and uncle to nieces, Buchanan was concerned.

“But the best way is not to attack a violent criminal. We should have more security patrolling the streets,” he said.

Mary Morse, a professor of women’s studies and English at Rider University in Lawrenceville, N.J., said she’s thought about it a lot. But she’d never buy a gun to defend herself, said the Morrisville resident.

“I feel the same about Tasers. Pepper spray is the furthest I’ll go. I’ve discussed it with my students, though I’m not sure they would all agree.” Her husband, Steve Morse, thinks the same way.

Regardless of what type of protection you need, it is clear that the discussion is a strong and ongoing one, and the decision as to how to protect yourself – especially if you are a woman – is a personal choice.
