Baby Care Products – What You Should Look For In Baby Safety Products

Knowing what baby care products you should be looking for can be a troublesome and stressful experience for any new parent. Baby safety is very important, and the anticipation of the responsibility that being a new parent necessarily involves is usually coupled with being inundated with brochures, leaflets and books listing countless dozens of essential products that you will need to purchase and install.

A very important consideration for your new baby is the question of temperature. It is easy for small children to get very cold, particularly in their hands and feet, so make sure that you have plenty of baby clothes, rompers or sleepers, and items to cover the little extremities such as mittens and booties. It is important to make sure that your new baby’s head is always covered, as a good deal of heat can be lost through the head, and for this reason a bonnet or hat is important. This is particularly true if your child is born during the winter months.

There has been much written about how to ensure that your baby is safe whilst sleeping in their cot or Moses basket. Make sure they sleep on their side or on their back and that you do not use pillows, duvets or loose toys, as these can easily cover the face of your baby, resulting in possible breathing difficulties. Keep in mind that cribs and cots must meet federal and ASTM standards, so if you purchase yours from one of the top manufacturers you can be sure that these are met.

It is also important to make sure that your baby is sleeping in a room which is of an appropriate temperature. There are a range of baby thermometers available which clearly indicate the optimum temperature for your baby’s nursery. If the room is quite warm then it is important not to use polyester sheets, and to remove any plastic wrapping that may be around the mattress. Make sure that you have plenty of baby blankets, and warm slick suits or rompers, in case the temperature drops too low.

There are a tremendous number of baby safety devices available to help protect your baby from the various dangers that an average family home presents. From baby gates to door stoppers, from electrical output plugs to fireguards – the sheer number and variety can be overwhelming. But in thinking about baby care products it is easy to forget that many of these items might be better described as toddler care products. It will be several months before your baby stands any chance of being able to get anywhere near any of these household dangers.

For this reason it is usually advisable for new parents to focus on those products that are actually going to be needed in the first few days and weeks of your new baby arriving. Baths and bottles are of particular importance. As a mother, whether you have decided to breast-feed or bottle feed it is sound advice to have bottles and baby milk formula ready just in case.

You will also need to make sure that you have a way of sterilizing the bottles, and it may well be advisable to practice sterilizing and making up the bottles of milk. Make sure that your bottles are glass: Canada has banned the use of plastic bottles due the possible content of Bisphenol A (BPA) in polycarbonate bottles, and many environmental organizations are suggesting that other countries should do the same due to its possible adverse effect on the endocrine system, responsible for the regulation of hormones in the body.

When it comes to transport, car seats are of critical importance and you will have to purchase this before you get baby home. If there is one baby care product that must purchase new it is this. This is not the time to take a chance on second hand goods, the history of which you do not know, and any child car seat could have been previously damaged without your knowledge. Also make sure to check the expiration date – yes, they have one – and that the seat is facing to the rear until your child is over one year old and at least 20 ponds, when he or she can be switched to a forward facing seat.

It is impossible to know for certain which baby care products your own baby will take to best. As long as you have purchased a good quality crib or cot, with appropriate sheets and blankets, a huge number of nappies and changes of clothes for the first few days and are confident in using the baby milk bottles and sterilizers, then the chances are that you will thoroughly enjoy the first few days of having your new baby, although in your sleep deprived state it is unlikely that you will
remember this!

It is often difficult for new parents to understand what baby care products they should purchase for their new addition to the family. The problem is not the range available, but knowledge of all the hazards presented to babies, and how to protect them from the risks these hazards present. Baby safety is specific to new babies that cannot help themselves should they be in trouble.

Mlb – New York Mets Fail Again

One of the greatest professional baseball teams, the New York Mets, were not able to qualify for this season’s playoffs as the team lost against the Florida Marlins 4-2 at the game which was played on last Sunday.

The fans, franchise and players’ disappointment was visibly noticeable on their faces. The New York Mets were hoping for a victory and a nice goodbye to their Shea Stadium, which will close its doors for the next season as will be replaced for a new stadium.

This situation has happened for two consecutive years to the Mets, this time losing 10 games of the 17 remaining of the regular season. The story repeats itself as the team was defeated by the Florida Marlins last year’s at the Shea Stadium, losing also a playoff opportunity to win the World Series. There is a slight difference, though, which is that this season was better than the last one.

Last year’s season became one of the worst for the Mets; after leading with a total of seven games, somehow the team lost 11 times and this opened a door for the Philadelphia Phillies to tie them with only three games left. During the 2007 season final game the Florida Marlins defeated the Mets 8-1 losing the opportunity to get to the playoffs. Blowing this incredible advantage, made the Mets become a piece in baseball history as no other team had ever had such a disastrous collapse in an overall season.

However, the Mets still hold the record of the most appearances in World Series than any other expansion team in Major League Baseball history.

At the Shea Stadium, the Mets ended with an overall record of 1,859-1,713. Mets players, fans, managers and franchise itself were not able to celebrate in a good way the closing of the Shea Stadium. The ending was unacceptable and it was a total disappointment for all, it was just too sad.

However, general manager Omar Minaya expressed, “It would have been better if we would have won, but I don’t think it spoils the celebration. What’s going on out there, it’s about the history of this building, the history of the players, and the history of this organization.”

For the 2008 season the Mets finished 89-73 with a .549 PCT and second in the East National League; indeed the season did not fulfill most of the expectations the team had especially because it is clear they had their ups and downs. Additionally, some key people, such as manager Willie Randolph, pitching Coach Rick Peterson and first base Coach Tom Nieto, were dismissed throughout the season and it had an impact in the team’s performance.

We hope this can be left in the past and that now everyone involved with the team focus on achieving next year’s goals at the new stadium. The Mets have a great history, a great team with good players and we all hope this will be just another experience from which they will learn before preparing for the 2009 season.

Amicus Brief: The Drug Abuse Industry

Over the past few years the attention ascribed to drug abuse has risen considerably. For instance, on February 11, 2008, the New York Times ran a full page ad sponsored by THEANTIDRUG.COM. Contained within the advertisement, or infommercial, was the following, “In fact, drug treatment admissions for prescription painkillers increased more than 300 percent from 1995 to 2005” with the data attributed to SAMSHA. And another quote from the ad stated, “In fact, 70 percent of persons age 12 and older who abuse prescription painkillers say they get them from a relative or friend”; a statistic garnered from a SAMSHA survey. Furthermore, the advertisement was endorsed by no less than eleven professional groups including pharmacists, physicians, nurses and dentists. The ad also lists five ways parents can protect their children from a drug abuse behavior—ways equivalent to parents telling their kids:  “look both ways before crossing the street”. So, we have parents, eleven professional organizations, and SAMSHA (sounds impressive) yet we have a drug abuse problem. How come?

There are other interested parties who may also wish to contribute to this amicus briefing. In a February 10, 2009 FDA presentation, the “Risk Management of Controlled Substances” was delineated as a shared responsibility between five Federal Agencies. These five agencies are: FDA, DEA, NIDA, SAMSHA and CDC. It is an interesting exercise to review the responsibilities of each of these agencies. Besides assuring that human drugs are safe and effective, the FDA is also responsible for “taking appropriate action on the marketing of regulated products in a timely manner”. The DEA is responsible for preventing abuse and diversion of controlled substances without interfering with legitimate access to pain relief medications. Strategic support and research “across a broad range of disciplines” to improve prevention, treatment and policy in regard to drug abuse and addiction is provided through NIDA. The CDC is assigned responsibility of assuring protection from infectious occupational, environmental and terrorist threats. Lastly, SAMSHA—worth quoting from the FDA’s presentation—“is responsible for providing national leadership in the development of policies, programs and services to prevent the onset of illegal drug use, to bring effective alcohol and drug treatment to every community, to regulate the use of medications in the treatment of opioid dependence, and to analyze and disseminate national data such as the annual National Survey on Drug Use and Health and the Drug Abuse Warning Network.

Clearly, the Nation has committed enormous resources to combat drug abuse while part of our culture accepts recreational drug use.  Professional societies recognize well the detrimental effects to individuals and society of drug abuse. Civic organizations too have raised awareness to the problems of drug abuse and have offered alternatives to, or counseling for drug abuse. Still drug abuse prevails and is as pervasive as ever throughout society. It would appear we have created a perpetual motion machine and perhaps indirectly, promote drug abuse. Dr. Frankenstein would be proud! As a Nation have we created a living, breathing organism feeding on a human behavioral trait for which there is no solution? Have we brought the drug culture out of the background, out of the shadows, and into the full bright light of day, and legitimized it? Indeed, have we created a behemoth industry around drug abuse?

Can we take a stand for the advancement of mankind and its indomitable spirit? Pisgah Labs has taken a stand. The Department of Homeland Security can probably get in on this action too as domestic and international terrorism efforts supported by the illicit drug trade are diminished. The upside for the Department of Labor’s statistics should demonstrate employment and productivity boosts because of decreased drug use. You be the judge, but as a friend of the court we proclaim it’s no contest: Pisgah’s technology will provide an important economic up-side to the Nation’s economy while solving one of society’s greatest ills.

After the 1978-79 season, four WHA teams, including the Alberta Oilers (who would become the Edmonton Oilers), joined the National Hockey League. The other three WHA teams were the Quebec Nordiques, Winnipeg Jets, and Hartford Whalers. In his first NHL season, 1979-80, Gretzky was awarded the Hart Memorial Trophy as the League’s Most Valuable Player (the first of eight in a row) and tied for the scoring lead with Marcel Dionne with 137 points (Dionne was awarded the Art Ross Memorial Trophy as the league’s leading scorer because he had scored more goals, even though Gretzky played fewer games). Gretzky was not eligible for the Calder Memorial Trophy, given to the top NHL rookie, because of his previous year of professional experience. The rule, however, was changed a few years later. Teemu Selänne is a case in point of this rule change. He won rookie of the year with 76 goals even though he previously had professional experience.

In his second season, Gretzky won the Art Ross (the first of seven consecutive years) with a single-season record 164 points, and won his second straight Hart Trophy. The Oilers were a young, strong team featuring forwards Mark Messier, Glenn Anderson and Jari Kurri, defenseman Paul Coffey, goalie Grant Fuhr, and Gretzky as its captain. In 1983, they made it to the Stanley Cup finals, only to be swept by the three-time defending champion New York Islanders. The following season, the Oilers met the Islanders in the Finals again, this time winning their first of four Stanley Cups over the next five years.
